Alexander Vargas, of Bogota, was 17 at the time of the Jan. 25 crash when he struck a 2022 Nissan Rogue driven by Dymond T. Fryson at the intersection of Palmer and Sherman avenues in Teaneck just before 8 a.m., then fled the scene on foot, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
Fryson's SUV was sent into a nearby house, as previously reported by Daily Voice, and she was pronounced dead on Friday, Jan. 25, due to injuries she suffered in the crash.
An investigation found that Vargas was under the influence of marijuana and was behind the wheel of a 2015 Ford Explorer when he blew several stop signs at 60 miles per hour, Musella said.
Before Fryson's death, Vargas, then a student at Bogota High School, was issued a delinquency complaint charging him with assault by auto, leaving the scene of a crash causing severe bodily injury and endangering an injured victim.
On Wednesday, Sept. 25, Vargas was waived into adult court and charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree vehicular homicide, second-degree leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, and third-degree endangering an injured victim.
A first appearance was held in Bergen County Superior Court that same day, and Vargas was ordered released on home detention.
